Uniform

Derwendeg school uniform is a blue, school jumper, blue or white polo shirt and black trousers or skirt with black shoes.  During the summer children may choose to wear black shorts/ summer dresses in school colours.

Please note that jewellery is limited to stud earrings and a watch.

To make it easier to find misplaced uniform and belongings PLEASE make sure that all items are clearly labelled with your child’s name; we are more likely to find lost property this way.

Uniform can be purchased from Ruggerbugs https://www.ruggerbug.co.uk/product-category/schoolwear/derwendeg-primary/

PE kit (Including outdoor learning)
PE may be taken outdoors, with this in mind, please make sure that PE kit includes some warm clothing.  It is important that the children are comfortable in their lessons and can move freely and stretch in their PE clothes.  For PE, we suggest:

Black or grey joggers/ leggings/ shorts

T-shirt or similar

A jumper or sweatshirt (to stay warm)

Trainers

NO jewellery is allowed for PE lessons, please remove earrings before school (if children can do this themselves they may do so in class, but no adult help is permitted), watches will be removed before the lesson, to keep everyone safe.

We do a lot of outdoor learning in Foundation phase, so please make sure your child has a waterproof coat everyday.

On Friday we do messier outdoor learning so please send them in with wellies and waterproofs (we are unable to use the school ones at the moment)

Money
Any money brought into school should be in a labelled envelope.

This is more important now than ever to reduce the risk of cross contamination.

Reading/ phonics
Your child will have a reading day to bring their book bag in, they will read in school that day and change their book. Please read their book at home with them and talk about the story. They will use sounding out and picture clues to help them.

RECEPTION: Will have a reading book in a few weeks. Your book will have no words to begin, and  will  receive a reading card for Parents to follow and ask their children questions.

We do Jolly phonics daily in school. There are lots of song clips you can look at on line (google Jolly phonics).

Spellings
Spellings will be given out once a fortnight on a Friday, the children should practise the spellings everyday for a test the following Friday. It is really important that they practise regularly for the spellings to ‘stick’ long term.

Homework
Once a fortnight they will be sent home  a ‘Beat it test’ for maths on a Tuesday. Year 1 will start first and Reception at a later date.  This is to practice at home as they will do the same one on that Friday and will hopefully ‘beat’ their previous score. Don’t worry if they don’t get them all right, (they don’t get long to do it, as it is about speeding up mental maths and is about getting better each time.)

You will be provided with a menu of homework activities for each half term. You can complete them in any order. If it is a practical activity please send me a photo on Dojo.

How can you help at home?
Read, read, read!  Send book bags in for reading every day.
Be encouraging, praise effort & complete any homework sent home.
Number practise daily
