Newport AFC
Newport County AFC Academy are holding an open trial recruitment event on Friday 28th May 2021, for next season’s U7 to U16 age groups. Please see the poster on the next page for more information.

Attenborough Movement
Tomorrow (Saturday, 8th May) is David Attenborough’s birthday. The Attenborough movement is an event organised on social media to raise awareness of looking after our environment and picking up litter so that it doesn’t get into our oceans. To support this cause, please go for a walk in our local area tomorrow and pick up 8 pieces (or 8 bags!) of litter and dispose of or recycle it appropriately.
Please remember to keep safe, to wear gloves or use a litter picker and remind the children not to touch anything sharp. Share your photos with us on Class Dojo and we will share them in assembly. There will also be a reward for all the children who get involved.
100 Year History Help
As you are all aware, we are in the process of researching the history of our school and are looking for events that would have taken place in specific decades. We have lots of recent pictures and newspaper articles but would like to know more about the earlier years of the school. If you know of an event that took place in the following decades, please send us a message or email 100@derwendeg.org : 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s
Visiting Artist
We have a visiting artist in next week working with our children to create a special piece of artwork for our 100 year celebrations. This will be done safely within a covid-19 risk assessment. Each class will work with the artist on a different day. Please check your child’s Dojo for their allocated day. The children will be painting so will need to wear old clothes to school on their allocated day.
Welsh Blood Service
The Welsh Blood Service are in urgent need of donations this week and month. There are still plenty of appointments available in May 2021 at their clinics in Bryn Meadows and Pontllanfraith Leisure Centre.
They are also looking for NEW donors to join their donation panel. Only 3% of the UK population donate. Can you make a difference?

Unauthorised Absences
Please ensure you are calling the school if your child is absent to report the reason for absence. When no reason for absence is received by the school, the absence is recorded as unauthorised which will negatively impact on your child’s absence record. Absences without reason are also monitored by the Education Welfare Officer.
Online Safety
It is important to keep our children safe online. There can be as many dangers online as there are in the real world. The website Internet Matters has a range of guides and advice to support us in keeping the children safe.
